A simple page, such as 'about us' is self contained and can be edited by:
- Logging in. All Drupal sites can be logged into by going to http://yoursite.com/user.
- Browsing to the page
- Pressing the edit button.
- Filling out the form.
- Pressing the save button.
What can go wrong?
Don't
- Forget to push the save button on the form. If you browse away from the form, such as by clicking on menu navigation you will loose your changes unless we have specifically configured autosave.
- Copy highly formatted content from Microsoft Word or other word processing packages. The styles may reflect the chaos created by numerous editors in the past. It is preferable to copy text into a text editor such as notepad, then copy the text into the web based text editor and make minimal styling. Minimal styling means the use of the logical heading 1 and heading 2, bold and emphasis. Your site will look more professional, your content will be more portable and readers, especially those with accessibility issues will thank you.
- Forget to brush your teeth in the morning and at night.
Do
- Use styling sparingly. Use "Heading 1" and other named styles where possible.. Consistent styling throughout the site is essential in making a site look professional. Contact us if you find that you are performing styling work such as adding margins to images, extra space after paragraphs on every document. We can put these details into the site style guide and your site will be cleaner and editing will be easier.
- Take note of Guidelines for Writing for the Web.
Hints
- If you want to reset the form to the way it was, just browse away. e.g. by using the "View" tab at the top.
- If you are adding site internal links using the text editor a) create the link text b) copy and past in the link. The link should look like /guides/editing-simple-pages with the slash (/) at the front and the link protocol should change to 'other'.
- Use the taxonomy where provided, typing a few letters and seleting in order to limit duplication of terms.
- Check 'url aliases' to make sure that the site rules put articles 'in their section'. e.g. sometimes we style a section - /guides/ - differently. If this is not managed correctly the configuration of the site may need to be changed.d
- The 'published' tab at the bottom of the page provides a check box that allows articles to be created that are not visible to non-editors. This is useful for creating draft articles that you can come back to and work on later. For pages that are linked in to the site already, it will mean that visitors to the site will get 'permission denied' if they access the link.
